FROM THE LAB: Check out our new music example series Patch Notes on Youtube!!!
Last week marked the 1 year anniversary of Modular On The Spot, the monthly, outdoor, modular synth picnic event series started by Eric Cheslak (aka Rodent) and Bana Haffar. Started in Los Angeles, the event has gained international attention, with off-shoot events in Atlanta, at Moogfest, and most recently, in Seattle, Chicago and the 1 year event in LA. The anniversary party included a number of LA’s finest modular artists, including M. Geddes Gengras, Anthony Baldino, Izapa and more. To celebrate, Rodent and Bana created 100 limited edition MOTS bundles, with a commemorative zine, MOTS button and patch, and a 10 track tape cassette featuring the work of some of the artists who have represented the event over the years.
The first event was held in the Frogtown area of Los Angeles along the LA river on July 23rd, 2015, also serving as a going-away party for local modular fanatic, Baseck. Since then, the event has moved up and down the river, settling in it’s current (top secret) location in late 2015. The images of modular synths in an outdoor setting caught the attention of the online community, and soon everyone wanted a Modular On The Spot in their town. This past May, the event was featured as a part of the massive Moogfest in North Carolina.
The event became a sort of “open source” concept, encouraging other cities to hold their own. Two weeks ago, one of our students, Bradley Millington, organized an event at the Seattle Gas Works, attracting modular performers and enthusiasts from around the Pacific Northwest.
Many of the Modular On The Spot events have also been streamed live via Periscope, which can be viewed as archived videos online. In LA, artistcalled6 has been filming and streaming performances for a number of months. The recent Seattle event was streamed here as well, including this awesome performance from Donald Crunk, which has been making the rounds…
